And as if by some gradual process, our life becomes more and more difficult and painful every day... It's hard to remember yesterday. But one feeling is clear: it can't be worse. The second part of the cult Serbian trilogy shows us the most difficult days of the Great War, the time when the army and the people faced temptations that exceeded the limits of human power. In the continuation of Under the Cross, the author does not strive for sensationalism, faithfully recording the retreat through the frozen mountains of Albania, he soberly and honestly records the everyday life of these soldiers who refuse to lay down their arms in the fight against enemies without faces, uniforms and flags - hunger, illness and exhaustion. Through the believable destinies of individuals, Jakovljević builds a mosaic of collective sacrifice and unshakable dignity that remains intact even in moments of greatest darkness. This work takes us from leaving our native hearths to the saving shores of Corfu, where the decimated army found the strength for its resurrection. Carrying the invisible cross of the entire homeland on their exhausted shoulders, the Serbian people came closer to immortality and glory with each step. The Arnauts stand in groups along the road and watch us maliciously. Like hyenas, they stalk their prey. Only when the infantry with rifles come along do they creep up and, huddled on the hill, watch the exhausted army. Although they are empty of soldiers' bags, as well as their bellies, the Arnauts know that there is no joke with tortured and stranded pedestrians, let alone fight.
