When, after an unexpected, violent attack, Ray ends up in intensive care with a fractured skull, his old friend Nerese, a police investigator about to retire, begins to investigate a seemingly insignificant case, revealing the face of the city he lives in, and perhaps the background of Ray's apparently naive charity...

As an excellent combination of a social novel and a suspenseful detective crime, it reveals to Croatian readers the face of urban American reality, as well as one of its true storytelling masters.
