Summary
Jean Echenoz: Sijevanje
He prefers to be alone and generally likes a single life, so he prefers to look at himself in the mirror than to look at other people and he renounces women with a calm soul, although they really like him because he is very good-looking and tall, he is too smart and skilled with words, and he is not even forty years old and still single. It's not that he likes men more, he's not even completely indifferent when ladies unobtrusively swarm around him, but for now it seems he's not willing to let them approach beyond a certain limit. This is one of the character traits of Gregor, the main character of Echenoz's novel "The Shining", which is particularly interesting for the Croatian readership because his inspirational thread is the biography of Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), who was born and "will grow up somewhere in the southeast of Europe, far from everything except the Adriatic Sea." A genius scientist who invented everything that will be useful to man in the coming centuries, is incapable of managing his affairs; science attracts him more than profit, and others steal his ideas. He is left with the "seeds" of his inventions and the company of pigeons with which he is only in love... Jean Echenoz born in Orange in 1947, he studied sociology, then construction, and before his literary career, he briefly worked as a journalist. Already with his first novel "Le Méridien de Greenwich" (Le Méridien de Greenwich, 1979) he won the Fénéon prize. To date, he has published fifteen novels, of which "I'm leaving" (2001), "Ravel" (2010) and "Sijevata" (2011) have been translated into Croatian. He is the winner of numerous awards, among which stand out the Prix Médicis, Prix Goncourt and the François Mauriac award. Numerous critical studies have been devoted to Echenoz's distinctive, highly stylized, parodically playful handwriting. He is considered one of the most lucid and inventive French novelists of our time.
