Donna Tartt's debut novel was published in 1992 and immediately brought the author the attention of readers and critics. The narrator, nineteen-year-old Richard Papen from California, comes to study at Hampden College in New England. He is fascinated by the uniqueness and elitism of the small group of Greek students. Richard joins a group whose attempt to recreate ancient Greek bacchanalia ends in murder. The group tries to forget the crime committed, but one of its members turns against the others, which causes a new tragedy and discord among once close friends.
