Antonio Tabucchi: Pereira claims that... One testimony
The author Antonio Tabucchi begins the description of his novel Pereira claims with the words: "Pereira means pear tree in Portuguese and, like all other fruit tree names, it is a surname of Jewish origin, just as in Italy surnames of Jewish origin are the names of cities. With this, I wanted to pay tribute to a people who left a deep mark on Portuguese society and who suffered great injustices in history. But another reason, this time of a literary nature, inspired me to choose that last name: Eliot's little intermezzo entitled What about Pereira? in which two friends call up a mysterious Portuguese man named Pereira, about whom nothing will ever be known. a frequent candidate for the Nobel prize for literature.
