Summary
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy: Resurrection
Resurrection, published in 1899, is the last great novel by Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The work is a deep critique of Russian society, the judiciary and the church at that time, imbued with the author's late philosophical and religious ideas. The plot follows the nobleman Dmitry Ivanovich Nekhlyudov, who, serving as a juror in court, recognizes the accused Katerina (Katjusha) Maslova. Ten years earlier, Nekhludov seduced Katyusha, which set in motion a series of events that led her to prostitution and a charge of murder by poisoning. Nekhludov feels enormous guilt and decides to make amends. He follows Katyusha on her journey to Siberia, renouncing her wealth and social status. The title "Resurrection" does not refer to a religious miracle, but to the spiritual rebirth of the two protagonists — Nehljud through repentance and sacrifice, and Katyusha through moral purification. Tolstoy sharply attacks the corrupt judicial system, the hypocrisy of the aristocracy and the duplicity of the official Church. The novel shows in detail the huge gap between the rich elite and the poor people, especially the prisoners and the peasants. Through Nekhludov's thoughts, Tolstoy advocates the Christian principles of love, not resisting evil with violence and the importance of personal conscience above the laws of the state.
