Summary
Sherwood Anderson: Winesburg, Ohio
Stories about life in a small town in Ohio
That Winesburg, Ohio was an exceptional work was evident already after its publication in 1919, when it attracted extraordinary attention. Older critics attacked him, while younger ones praised both the work and the author as forerunners of the new era. Winesburg, Ohio was and remains a true pearl of world literature and it is not easy to fathom why it has only now been translated into Croatian, but our joy is all the greater because we are the first to have this privilege! Like Amarcord, it's a beautiful labor of love that celebrates small town life for some bygone days of innocence and benevolence.
The main character, journalist George Willard, is actually the author himself who in a small town of lonely souls is trying to tear down the walls that separate the locals. He is also the main link in about twenty melancholic stories in which residents approach him - each one brilliantly psychologically elaborated in a "Dostoyevsky" style - and entrust him with their most hidden secrets, feeling that only he in Winesburg understands them...
Although critics have not agreed whether Winesburg, Ohio is a novel or a collection of short stories, in 1998 it was included in the list of 100 best novels 20th century Modern Library and in 24th place! - Colorful shop
