Katunarić Dražen

Summary

Dražen Katunarić: Goodbye, desert

In 1993, near the town of Tamesguide in Algeria, Islamic terrorists beheaded twelve Hidroelektra workers. Burdened by the Homeland War, the Croatian public hardly notices this terrible crime, and forgets it even faster. Years later, the testimonies of two surviving workers about this massacre appear. Dražen Katunarić, with his novel Zbogom, pustinjo, the first on this topic in our region, gives a wider context that led to the tragedy, a form and a face to the mutual hatred, all with the careful nuances of an excellent novelist. Aware that a documentary retelling of the workers' events on the construction site would lead to social realism, Katunarić abolishes the conventional narration and introduces a polyphonic, compositionally interesting structure of parallel writing with living characters and constant counterpointing of the fundamental voice. In the male world of the construction site, one woman, Klaudija, a representative of the hippie lost generation of free love and Rimbaud adventure, is the main character, and Tarzan, Rajko, Dubravko gravitate around her... The fragility of human destinies crucified by love and other passions against the background of historical madness, and without moralizing or pathos, give the novel its stamp; The "collision" of continents and civilizations, peripheral Europe and desert Africa, Croats and Arabs is shown without any embellishment or political correctness. Built on the contrasts of rough and poetic, cruel and cosmic, amoral and starry, the novel Goodbye, Desert simultaneously contains the persuasiveness of a document and the layering of psychologically dynamic reality wrapped in the beauty of literary fiction.
