Summary

Curtis Sittenfeld: Golden Benches

Lee Fiora is an intelligent girl who is fourteen years old when her father drops her off in front of her new home at the prestigious Ault High School in Massachusetts, USA. They will leave their hometown of South Bend, Indiana behind and step with open hearts into what the glamorous school brochure portrays as a world where boys in sweaters chat in front of old brick buildings and everyone sings the hymn in unison in the chapel. Lee soon discovers that Ault is a closed world made up of attractive, blasé teenagers who spend their summers on Nantucket and speak to each other in a language full of abbreviations that only they understand. At the same time intimidated and fascinated by her classmates, Lee will become an astute observer – and eventually a participant in their rituals and behavior. As a student who made it to school thanks to a scholarship, Lee will constantly feel like an outsider who is both attracted and rejected by her peers. Complex relationships with teachers, intense friendships with other girls, obsession with a colleague who is less than a boyfriend and more than a crush, conflicts with parents from whom Lee is increasingly distant - everything will come together in a complicated, exciting and often painful adolescent world.

Curtis Sittenfeld's debut novel is an intriguing and moving coming-of-age story, but at the same time an incredibly interesting presentation of the problems of class, race and gender in turbulence fear, ambition and a trembling heart that only teenagers can have.
The translation is signed by Dubravka Pleše, and the illustration on the cover is taken from the American edition.
