Summary

J.J. Connolly: Crime Cake

Even the best cakes you can imagine don't have as many layers as a crime cake - a metaphor for the complex nuances of the criminal milieu.

The story is set in contemporary London, and we are guided through the story by one of the most polished guys you've met lately; sophisticated, anonymous dealer. Because if he revealed his name to us, it would mean that we know too much, and that would not be good at all. And it wouldn't be good, especially since he has a cunning plan to secretly, and very, very quietly, dispose of enough discreetly laundered money so that he can retire to an early and very, very comfortable retirement.

He does his work under the impeccable veil of an ordinary businessman with a mantra of mandatory invisibility, and keeps his crew on a short leash to keep everything running smoothly until it's time for that much-coveted retirement. Because that's probably the most important thing in this very dangerous world: doing things cleanly and neatly. Only fools think that cops are fools.

An opportunity will arise for a lucrative job, after which retirement smiles: one of the bosses of the old forge, Jimmy Price, will hire him to find the promiscuous daughter of one of his colleagues, Eddy Ryder. He can almost start humming "My Way".

From the glitter of London's club scene to the roughest and cruelest corners of the underworld, the world of this dark and gritty thriller unfolds. In 2004, J. J. Connolly adapted his novel into a screenplay for an excellent film directed by Matthew Vaughn (director of Stardust), with the inimitable Daniel Craig in the lead role.
