Summary
Jean Delumeau: The Civilization of the Renaissance
The notion of the resurrection of literature and art, thanks to the discovery of antiquity, created by Italian humanists and taken over by Vasari, was certainly fruitful, as are all the manifestos published by the victorious young generations over the centuries. That term meant youth, dynamism, the will to renew. He had in him that necessary unfairness of the harsh statements of young people who break, or believe they break, with the mental categories of their predecessors. But the term "Renaissance", even in the narrow sense of the humanists, who mainly applied it to literature and plastic arts, seems insufficient to us today. It seems that he rejects as barbaric the mysterious creations of Romanesque art or the weak ones from the Gothic period.
