Summary

Torbjorn Faerovik: The Middle Kingdom

A Journey into Chinese History

One evening in 1972, the American writer Harrison Salisbury had a rather delicious dinner in Beijing. On his way back to the hotel, he experienced something unusual: »The night covered the city like velvet, and the moon was like silver. It was so quiet that one could hear the wheels of a bicycle turning a block away, and the silence flowed through the shadows of the trees like an invisible stream of water. I've never experienced such silence in a city, and that again, behind countless walls, in narrow courtyard houses, in dark hutongs, a million people were sleeping, or more precisely, not a million, but seven million, and that in a silence so deep that I could almost hear them breathing in and out...". A few weeks later, Richard Nixon came to visit. The President of the United States of America was in a peaceful mood and wanted to make friends with the sleeping giant of the east. His close adviser, Henry Kisinger, traveled with him. Kissinger told Mao that he had recommended that students at Harvard read the leader's writings. "Those records of mine are not really of any particular value," replied Mao. "There is nothing useful in them". "The leader's writings changed China and the world," Kisinger insisted, but Mao was equally adamant: "I didn't manage to change anything, maybe only some places in and around Beijing."
