Summary
Xinran: Good Chinese Women
Hidden Voices. Struggling to avoid the rigid communist censorship in China without at the same time betraying the trust of the women who opened up to her, Xinran collected these oral histories and, after emigrating to London, published several of them in the very moving book Good Chinese Women: Hidden Voices. The book contains stories about sexual abuse of girls, arranged marriages, sacrifices for family and husbands that are expected of women, stories about suicides, tragic family losses, brutal social conventions from which it is impossible to escape... The author finds a common thread and shows the subordinate position of women, regardless of which social class they belong to.
