Summary
Julia Cage: Saving the media
Capitalism, participatory financing and democracy
The media is in crisis, not only classic print media that face competition from digital, lower-quality editions, but also television and radio. In this book, which is based on an in-depth analysis of the functioning and financing of the media in Europe and the United States of America, a new model of "non-profit information societies" is proposed, in which commercialism and non-profitability are harmonized. The most important thing is actually democracy, that is, the possibility for the user to receive the highest quality information, which makes him a more active participant in the political process. In that case, the media would have to establish an ownership structure in which they would depend as little as possible on shareholders, large advertisers and political powers.
