Fante John

Summary

John Fante: Ask the Dust

To say that this is a passionate or perhaps erotic romance novel would be exactly blasphemous to Fante's masterpiece before you. A beautifully told story about longing and hatred, falling in love and being infatuated, unattainable dreams and callous reality in the relationship between a young man who wants to become a writer and a Mexican girl who does not want to remain a waitress even today - 70 years after its first publication - radiates exceptional freshness and poetic beauty. Basically, a beautiful book, but only the ending... it's a story in itself and another reason to read it! By a whim of fate, I guess, this novel and its author were unfairly neglected for years, so that the film adaptation (2007), with attractive actors Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell, would stimulate more than deserved interest of a wider readership. The colorful shop welcomes this second literary discovery of John Fante and joins him in publishing another, perhaps his best, book (it was preceded by Wait for Spring, Bandini). However, our edition, and the aforementioned film, probably would not have existed and Fante would certainly have remained an obscure and forgotten author if Charles Bukowski, digging through the shelves of the local library, had not come across this book, blown the dust off it and started reading and... of course, he was delighted! Later, when Bukowski became famous, in all interviews he mentioned Fante as his greatest role model and encouraged the reissue of his books, and he also wrote a foreword (Fante was my God) and a poem dedicated to Fante, which we highlight as more than attractive additions to this edition.
