Summary
Roger Caillois: Aesthetic Dictionary
With an introductory text by Marguerite Yourcenar
The importance of this work by Roger Caillois, a great French writer, sociologist and literary critic, is immeasurable. It is actually a study of the most important questions that literature raises: the question of literature in society, literature before morality, literature and language. It was born out of a reflection on the development of literature from romanticism, through paroxysm, to the destructive anger that characterizes its consumption today. Nevertheless, this discussion is not only an investigation of the sources - aesthetic, moral and sociological - of contemporary literature, but also a kind of effort to determine its ultimate goals.
