Boualem Sansal: 2084. The End of the World
In this novel of phantasmagoric utopia/dystopia, the Algerian novelist Boualem Sansal offers us a contemporary version of Orwell's masterpiece, one in 1984, one hundred years later, in the age of religious fanaticism. In the vast imaginary empire of Abistan (a country similar to Islamic North Korea), the inhabitants are constantly under surveillance, subjected to faith in the one God, Yolah, who is represented on earth by God's messenger Abia. The novel was declared the best book of 2015 according to a survey by the magazine Lire, and it also received a grand prize from the French Academy.
