Summary
Laslo Vegel: Balkan Beauty or Šlemil's Bastard
Laslo Vegel's novel Balkan Beauty or Šlemil's Bastard tells the history of a Novi Sad family. Her story begins at the end of the first decade of the 20th century and ends at the beginning of the 21st century - it shows the absurdity of the family story of a national minority, narrating the parallel lives of a grandfather (Janoš Šlemil) and his grandson (Ferenc Šlemil). The last name Šlemil points to the protagonist of the novel Schlemihl, Adelbert von Chamisso, however, while the main problem of Chamisso's hero is the loss of his own shadow, the protagonists of Lasl Vegel's novel are concerned with the fact that they have multiple shadows, in the novel they have multiple names (Janoš, Johan, Jovan, i.e. Ferenc, Franja, Franc), and are carriers of multiple identities (Hungarian, German, Serbian). Such a fate is imposed on them by historical storms that generate constant changes of government in these ethnically colorful areas.
Balkan beauty or Šlemil's bastard is a drama of people whose identities were imposed, but it is also a historical fresco of a peripheral area of Europe. A picture of an epoch and an anamnesis of a disease.
