Summary
Dinko Mihovilović: Doručak
*The book is underlined in places with a ballpoint pen.
The main character Doručka grew up in a home for neglected children. The novel takes place years later, when Mia has already become a doctor and started a family. However, her eldest son Damjan disrupts the image of a perfect family with his maladjusted behavior - closing in on himself and showing signs of hidden aggressiveness. The problems that arise with such behavior as a result both at home and at school make it difficult for Mia to fight her own demons, with the feeling of loneliness and not belonging to the world she seems to have fit into. When her son is also threatened with a stay in an institution, Mia will conclude that there is only one way to save him from it.
Dink Mihovilović's second novel is a layered and poignant family drama that also talks about the unspeakable. The author enters the perspective of the female protagonist with amazing ease, using economical language to achieve the maximum of emotions, due to which this novel is not forgotten long after reading.
