Berković Zvonimir

Summary

Zvonimir Berković: Letters from Dilettantija

After the January 3 rotation of government in 2000, Zvonimir Berković began his public advisory internship in the form of epistles, addressing real and symbolic addressees of the Croatian past and present.
With a refined, somewhat old-fashioned and balanced sentence, he dared to mediate between the aesthetic principles of his own world, never stripped of their ethical counterparts, and the Croatian political class, usually deaf to poetry, Plutarch or Haydn. Only an apparently futile effort, namely, to publicly send a message to the protagonists of the government about the structural and ethical obligations of its conduct, demonstrates the author's precisely serious type of thinking, but also depathetized moralizing and intellectual activism that is not at all common in the domestic cultural-political sky. Berković's ambition to put an end to politicians who silently, without reciprocation, "participate" in communication, recreating more or less their own self-sufficiency, certainly impresses and represents a credible social chronicle of the second half of the last and the first years of this century, if not, writing to the dead and out of time and an alternative history of Croats. As the latter are in a constant working relationship with the other world, the author's metaphysical correspondence does not oblige them at all, of course, but it has great significance in the evaluation of modernity, which can be read as a derivative of the potential of the past, even with such a metaphorical situation.
At the same time, Berković, without the slightest messianic complex, obsessively but integrally reads Croatia's past, in order, I guess, to console its present. Somewhere between full-blooded literature and masterful journalism, somewhere between a literary-political essay and a short story, he writes his and our Dilettante, giving it a name, origin and meaning. At the same time, applying some of his findings as, it seems, the exact solution to her tough and often unsolvable equation.
