This novel is the confession of a nameless hero who, lying in a sick bed somewhere in Brazil, decides to tell his story to a doctor. He has woven his whole life around the figure of Dr. Nutels, whom he met when they were still children, on the ship Madeira on which they sailed to Brazil fleeing Russia, and he is somehow obsessed with him. On the ship, the two boys bond strongly, and the protagonist will carry the memory of that friendship for the rest of his life. Although they never saw, heard or wrote to each other again, Noel left an irrevocable mark on him and, although absent, guided him through life. Through the protagonist's memories and anecdotes, a complex story opens before the reader about friendship, Russian Jews who immigrated to Brazil, and the relationship between Brazilian politics and the indigenous population.
His Majesty of Xingu is a novel written in the form of a frenetic stream of consciousness, simultaneously imbued with melancholy and humor. Moacyr Scliar opens important topics of love, hate and obsession, politics and history and never written letters. Giving voice to the owner of the small store "His Majesty", this great Brazilian classic mediates the life of a small man, reflecting through him all the complexity of Brazilian society at a historical moment of numerous turmoil.
