Desai Kiran

Summary

Kiran Desai: Hubble in the Guava Orchard

«Hubble in the Guava Orchard» is Kiran Desai's first novel, published in 1998, in which her narrative talent is already revealed, creating a special world of contemporary Indian culture. The exceptionality of Kiran Desai in this novel is manifested in the combination of wit and irony on the one hand, and a gentle narrative voice on the other hand, which has an understanding for its unfortunate characters.

"Trouble in the Guava Orchard" is a novel on the border between reality and fantasy: unable to fit into the real world, the main character, an unusual young man, Sampath, decides to retire to an orchard and live and sleep on a guava tree. After him comes the whole family, even curious people from the nearby town, and finally the army and the police. The comical situation is on the verge of tragic, but Kiran Desai eases every difficult situation with humorous descriptions.
