"A snob is one who deeply admires shallow things" - is one of the many effective definitions from this seemingly humorous collection of human portraits and catchphrases, but actually a kind of elaboration of the equally rooted habit and stereotype that belonging to a community is measured by status, and the value of a person by title. The author's excellence, demonstrated/proved, among others, in The Luck of Barry Lyndon and Vanity Fair, is here visible not only in witty swagger, but also in lucid detection - he writes like a moral anatomist, dissecting society with a pen as sharp as a scalpel, simultaneously mocking and sympathizing, entertaining and disturbing, to warn of man's primal obsessive-compulsive desire for recognition and reputation.
Today, almost two centuries after its publication, this cult classic is read with a new freshness, because despite the tremendous scientific progress and development of society, snobbery is persistent, deeply rooted, probably ineradicable... The result is that we are bombarded daily with "overwhelming" information about various dignitaries and "role models" and the inevitable celebs, influencers and similar viral "haunters"... because snobbery knows no boundaries or eras, it only changes "styling and outfit", while the essence remains unchanged. Therefore, the Book of Snobs can also be read as a moral lesson about modesty and self-awareness - almost lost virtues in a society that extends to intrusive display and vain posturing. In this sense, Thackeray's book seems almost prophetic and does not cease to be relevant: reading it, we are not only reading about England in the 19th century, but also about our time and the future; she invites us to laugh, but also to imagine.
