Hernandez Felisberto

Summary

Felisberto Hernandez: Crocodile and other stories

The adventures of a very poor pianist, in which the sense of comedy transforms the bitterness of a life full of defeats, are the starting point of "Crocodile and other stories" by the Uruguayan Felisberto Hernandez. It is enough for him to start narrating the petty miseries of life that took place in the small orchestras of Montevideo cafes and at concerts that circulated around the provincial towns in the valley of the La Plata River, so that gags, hallucinations and metaphors in which objects live as persons begin to multiply on the pages. But that is only a starting point. What develops Hernandez's fantasy are unexpected invitations that open the doors of mysterious houses, secluded estates where rich and eccentric characters, women full of mystery and neurosis live. Felisberto Hernandez (1902 – 1964), Uruguayan, born in Montevideo, storyteller and pianist. Probably the most brilliant representative of the fantastic literature of his country. And according to the opinion of the critics, he shares with Borges the leading place in that literary genre in the La Plata river valley. Felisberto Hernandez is a writer who is unlike anyone: no European and no South American; he is a true "free shooter" who questions every classification and every feature, but is unmistakably recognizable as soon as his pages are opened.
