Summary

Jacek Dukaj: Ice - Part 3

In many ways, readers are presented with an exciting ending to Ice, one of the most thoughtful and richly constructed worlds of literary fiction, which transcends genre boundaries and could rather be described as the world of an anthropological novel. The intersection of the sovereignty of knowledge from the natural sciences, the depth of a humanistic perspective and developed, controlled storytelling skills triumphs in crazy Siberia, dangerous armed conflicts and a love encounter that is literally larger than life.

Perhaps the spirit of the domestic readership will be particularly excited by the place Dukaj u Ledo assigns to the character of Nikola Tesla, who, along with Rasputin, Trotsky, Crowley, Berdjaev, participates in and contributes to the world of alternative history in an expectedly eccentric and unusual way, all the while testing the limits of our sense of logic, our beliefs and reasoning.

The action of the novel "Ice" takes place in an alternative reality in which the First World War never happened, and Poland is still ruled by Tsarist Russia. After the famous explosion in Tunguska, strange ice begins to spread across Siberia, containing its unusual angry inhabitants, the frost angels, and which reaches all the way to Warsaw. The main character Benedikt Gjeroslavski, a brilliant mathematician and avid gambler, begins to examine this phenomenon more closely, working for the Ministry of Winter. The plot of this novel is full of astonishing twists, political, love and criminal intrigues, and above all, the author's incredible imagination.
