Summary
Octave Aubry: Marija Walewska
Writer Ubrey calls Poland's Walewska "Napoleon's great and secret love". This love of his, however, was a "secret" only in the first year¸and only for wider circles; but it really was and remained "great" until the death of Napoleon, so both the French and the Poles devote their keenest historical interest to it to this day. She was a truly unusual woman, who at the beginning of her acquaintance with Napoleon sacrificed herself to the great emperor in the hope that she would thus resurrect an independent Poland, while later she loved him with such tenderness and fidelity that she belongs among the most tender lovers in world history, who enjoy and deserve the deepest sympathy. The set of personalities, which Aubry - with Maria and Napoleon at the head - brings before us, makes for a reading that is hardly more interesting and historically instructive.
