Summary
Slobodan Novak: Mirisi, zlato i tamjan
Mirisi, zlato i tamjan, a novel by the Croatian writer Slobodan Novak (1924-2016), written in 1967 and published in 1968. It is one of the most appreciated novels of Croatian literature in general. It is often cited as an example of existentialist literature. It is narrated through the monologue of the main character Malog. On an unnamed island, he and his wife, Drago, take care of a sick old woman, Madonna, a countess who once owned most of the island. He is a retired intellectual and invalid of the Second World War. A representative of the post-war generation of despondents who no longer believe in anything, Mali deals with communist and Catholic ideologies through monologues, having lost faith and all illusions.
