Summary
Željko Ivanjek: Pongracevo
The fate of the main protagonists of these short stories by Željko Ivanjek is determined by the proximity of a large factory (Končar), an old people's home and Remiza. Grown up in the shadow of the first television and local heroes Menda and Slavica, in suburban cinema with James Bond and westerns, the characters of almost every Ivanjek story hide some secret - a grandfather hides an illegitimate child from his daughter, an old man hides a boyish love from a friend, a wife leads a double life before her husband, a lady who, working with foreigners in a large socialist factory, hides her real job from the first neighbors... A teenager reveals his father's secret with incomprehensible jokes. And the fears of war. A poet who "disappeared" in the USA appears after several decades with a book in English. In some stories, the reader will recognize allusions to real events — to a multiple murder or to the choice of a Bond girl. Finally, the literary critic Željko I. appears among the characters, who is directly named by the dealer in old books. The stories show the author's intention to penetrate into the whole of reality, composed of lived and imagined parts. And finally, it is not unimportant to mention that the most famous resident of Pongracevo was the poet - Tin Ujević.
