Summary
Ana Vukmanović: In search of a spring - water
The study In search of a spring-water - images of water in South Slavic oral lyrics shows the different meanings of water - in the language of oral lyrical songs, fragments of mythopoetic performances, the ritual layer of oral lyrics, spatial models, fruitful, erotic, lustrative and healing symbolism. It follows how water forms metaphors that conceptualize the world - external and internal, how it builds songs as part of formulas and becomes part of magical language within blessings, oaths and curses. In the myth, water is found at the very beginning, in aquatic chaos, and after the division into chaos and cosmos, it takes its liminal position, springing from the roots of the world tree or surrounding the cosmic island emerging from the primordial ocean. It is also the habitat of mythical creatures, it is perceived as the most striking border between this world and the next, but it is also located in the immediate vicinity of human houses and settlements. As a place-sign, it forms liminal chronotopes by actualizing its dual nature, which is perhaps most clearly illustrated by the pair of living and dead water, in which creative and destructive forces meet, and finally the basic opposition between life and death. It then enters the representations of fertility, nature and people, and forms the symbolism of eroticism and vitalism. In the magical layer of traditional culture, water is conceptualized as pure and impure, healing and dangerous. The complex and ambiguous images of water in oral lyric poems show that the semantics of water is layered, that different meanings are not strictly separated, but intertwine and correspond with each other.
