At the center of the plot is Terrill “Terri” Riles, who was taught from a young age by her mother to hide her gender and grow up as a boy—in order to survive and gain knowledge about life in the Wild West. After the death of his parents, he pretends to be the boy Terrill and receives the protection of the Lambeth family. As he approaches adulthood, he encounters love dilemmas and dangers in the outlying Pecosk region. In the scene of a buffalo chase, which the text originally translated shows as a "black sea of spines" and a "deafening roar", Terrill and the others narrowly avoid tragedy as the cart makes its way through a herd of buffalo.
Zane Gray was one of the most prolific authors of classic western novels, known for his extensive descriptions of the landscape and moral dilemmas of the characters.
This novel offers an unusual male-female identity and struggle for self-determination.
The depiction of life in the American South Texas/Pecos region is full of action, romance and the struggle for survival.
