Novgorodski Antonije

Summary

Antonius of Novgorod: Knjiga poklonik

From the cover:

On the eve of the Crusader capture of Constantinople in 1204, a Russian traveler embarks on a journey to the Holy Land. Constantinople is a stop on his pilgrimage. Whether he ever reached his destination is unknown; however, this traveler, who a few years later would become the archbishop of Novgorod, would precisely document his stay in the imperial city. He compiled a report on the trip, which he called Knjiga palomnik (Knjiga poklonik), and in it he recorded the holy places in Constantinople as he found them around 1200. Hence, his report represents the last source we have about the capital of the Byzantine Empire before it was looted a little later in the Fourth Crusade.
The text Knjige palomnik, which came down to us through collections from the 16th-18th centuries. century, until now it was known almost only through the Russian edition from 1899, which was based on half of the manuscripts known and available to this day. The reconstruction of the text in this edition by the Russian scientist Loparjov gives the impression that the confused descriptions of the city are based on a late copy of the report and that the dislocation of holy buildings and relics originates from the author's faded memory, which travel direction was no longer fresh in his memory, and that he forgot the real places of churches and monasteries with a similar name.
Researching the entire manuscript material that is now available to us leads to a different conclusion. With the help of the newly added transcripts, it is possible to clarify certain sections that until now were not properly understood and often required corrections, as well as shed light on the author's supposedly complicated modus operandi.
