Summary

English-Croatian dictionary of cell and molecular biology

The first Croatian edition of the "English-Croatian dictionary of cell and molecular biology" is a translation of the fifth edition of the work "The Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology" (Elsevier Ltd., 2013) by J. M. Lackie. The Croatian edition was created by translating terms and definitions from the original, with an attempt to respect the conventions of various scientific disciplines that overlap with molecular and cellular biology, and is the result of a multi-year collaboration between biologist Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Petre Korać and prof. Ph.D. Mirjane Pavlica from the Department of Molecular Biology of the Biology Department of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Zagreb and Croatian terminologist Ana Vraneš. In order to facilitate navigation from the perspective of the Croatian nomenclature of cellular and molecular biology as a starting point for the search, at the end of the book there is a "Croatian-English list of names" with a highlighted page number where it is possible to find the equivalent English name with the corresponding definition of the term. In addition to concise definitions within approximately 12,000 entries, the dictionary also contains 37 tables with an overview of the most important terms and an appendix with the Croatian names of SI units, abbreviations and useful constants. "The aim of the dictionary is to standardize the Croatian nomenclature of cellular and molecular biology, and the translation is based on the English original because English is today the most important language of the majority of natural and exact scientific disciplines. Although today English is the international language of many sciences, just as it used to be largely Latin in biology or medicine, not only because of the pedagogical needs of professional training at different levels but also in order to preserve national identity by taking care of language cultivation, it is extremely important to systematically tradition and develop terminological systems in different disciplines." Ph.D. August Kovačec, professor emeritus
