Jean Cocteau in his short novel The White Book describes the turbulent maturation of an anonymous young man. Discovering the richness and variety of interpersonal relationships, he becomes more and more aware of their complexity, which scares him. His own and other people's actions and choices confuse him, and in search of security he even decides to go to a monastery. However, he soon realizes that he is unable to overcome the vitalism in himself...
