Summary
Aleksandar Tišma: The Day of Postponement
The desire of the protagonist of The Day of Postponement is a subversive attempt to remove the shackles of life's tasks in a society of rigid rules and narrow choices. However, the hero of this novel is not a man who will become an adventurer. The dream of that other, authentic life that he sees on the movie screen - will remain only a dream, because at the same time he does not have the strength to embark on a physically difficult and dangerous journey by train to the West, towards freedom. As readers of Tishma's prose, however, we also know that his rough, difficult, and sometimes raw story about man, who is depicted as a corporeal, animalistic and earth-bound being, would not have been so great and powerful if we had not, as a counterweight, as an indistinct whisper in the background, heard a melody that grows into an omnipresent feeling woven from an unspoken and inexpressible dream of escape.
