Deve: kao roman...

Joanidis Panos

Summary

Panos Joanidis: Deve: as a novel...

From the cover:

"In the novel 'Camels', which means guardian angels in Sanskrit, the author presents us with one of the most beautiful books in the modern Greek language about the relationship between humans and animals. It is about stories about pets that share life with one family: Peter Archontidis' two children discover in their childhood that they have the characteristics of "camels". They take care and treatment of cats and dogs from the neighborhood and the house with great enthusiasm, developing deeper communication with their four-legged roommates. Touching stories, cat, dog and human, are interwoven with shrewd observations about social relations and are based on the stories of great animal lovers from Greek literature: Emanuel Roidis, Mihailo Micakis, Zahari Papantoniou, Nikos Kavadijas, E. H. Gonatas, Zirana Zateli." Fragiski Abadzopulu, Athens Review of Books

Panos Joanidis undertook an unusual feat - to write the history of the family through the relationship to animals, but the task went beyond the given framework, and the author captures not only the picture of Cypriot but also contemporary society on a global scale. The protagonists of this novel, sometimes funny to the point of tears, sometimes touching and tragic, are seemingly ordinary people: children who take care of animals, a grizzled neighbor who takes out his frustrations on street cats, a clumsy veterinarian, a railway employee who milks a goat in his bedroom, a poetess who at first is afraid of animals, but then becomes a protector of abandoned cats and many others. And yet, at the very core of the storytelling, the main role belongs to our silent four-legged companions, cats and dogs.
