The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy novel written by the English academic and philologist J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier work, The Hobbit, but developed into a much larger and more complex story. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, and a large part of it was created during the Second World War. Although the novel was planned to be published in one volume, it was published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955, and was usually published that way later. Since its first publication, it has been printed many times and translated into a large number of languages, and it has become one of the most popular and influential works of literature of the 20th century.
