The novel is set in Arizona, where we follow the character of Jane Withersteen, a strong and independent woman who owns a huge ranch. Jane is at the center of the conflict between the Mormon community, which is under the influence of cruel and manipulative leaders, and freedom-loving settlers and nomadic ranchers. She is not only a woman in a society traditionally dominated by men, but also a symbol of the struggle for personal freedom in an environment that is deeply divided due to religious, political and social tensions.
One of the key characters is Jase Henderson, a mysterious rider and fighter, who enters Jane's life with the aim of protecting her and helping her in her struggles against unwanted pressures. Jase is the embodiment of the ideal Western hero - brave, quiet, fair, with deep moral convictions, but with a sadness that is inseparable from his past life.
The novel also features Bern Venters, a young man who initially plays the role of Jane's helper, and through the plot develops into an independent hero. He gradually becomes a key character who will help resolve the conflict.
"Rider of the Lone Star" is not just an action adventure; it is also a deeply emotional story about the fight for freedom, love, courage and moral decisions that the characters must make in the ruthless environment of the wild west. Gray deals with issues of religion, morality, and personal freedom - themes that are often present in his works.
One of the central themes of the novel is the struggle between individual freedom and collective norms imposed by society.
