Summary
Miloš Crnjanski: A Drop of Spanish Blood
In this intriguing story of love and seduction, the novel's heroine Lola Montez is revealed to readers gradually, as a synthesis of opposites and seductive landscapes of physical and spiritual, sensual and metaphysical, love and hate. With her appearance on the stage of the Munich theater, incredibly beautiful and charismatic in a marvelous dress woven from lace and black silk, woven with gold and a single red thread, she seduced not only all the Bavarian gentlemen present but also the king himself, leading the audience to ecstasy with her passionate and unearthly dance... However, one thoughtless gesture, when she sends a letter through the theater footman into the hands that "should not have been received", will cause a real scandal... In the novel A Drop of Spanish Blood, Miloš Crnjanski builds a lyrical macrocosm in which he places the character of a woman for whom the world is an open stage on which life unfolds in all its endless and often controversial meanings. However, the freedom, passion and unrestrained sensuality of the magical and mysterious Lola Montez could not go unpunished, and she will face not only the harsh condemnations of the Catholic Church but also the feeling of her own emptiness and sadness.
