Dušan Šimko: Juan Zabala's Marathon
In the book of stories Juan Zabala's Marathon, Slovakian writer Dušan Šimko, who has lived in Switzerland since 1968, introduces us to the recent history of Košice, his hometown, through stories about more or less important historical events and individual human lives affected by these events. The old medieval town, which was one of the first in Europe to receive its own coat of arms, thus becomes the stage where the interesting, unusual, layered destinies of many of Šimko's heroes unfold. The story that gave the collection its title focuses on the great Košice Marathon in 1931, where the "exotic newcomer" Argentinian Juan Zabala won, describing the atmosphere of the great sporting event and exciting details related to the enthusiasm that followed. And the other stories in this collection, as picturesque and often humorous episodes from the everyday life of the city in different periods of the 20th century, with the life stories of the actors, real or fictional, represent a successful and mature artistic reconstruction and contribute to the authenticity of Šimko's narrative manuscript.
