Summary
Lars Saabye Christensen: Model
The novel Model, published in 2005, about a painter who loses his sight, is considered by the writer to be one of his most important works.
The novel was awarded the prestigious British Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, and was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. vision In his despair, he makes a pact with the devil in the form of an old schoolmate, who is an eye surgeon.
Everything that should be important in his life, his wife, six-year-old daughter, friends - everything is subordinated to art.
His painterly obsession with his daughter as his favorite model takes an incredible turn in the novel; on his newly completed canvases, at the jubilee exhibition, the figure of a completely different girl with big blue eyes is present.
Can the artist control his obsession, the subconscious?
How far is the painter willing to go in order to create his art, and what is more important, art or man – are some of the questions that problematize this work by Christensen. It contains a merciless description of the artist's preoccupation with himself.
The whole novel is actually a picture of the painter's despair.
