Summary

Gunnhild Oyehaug: Knots

The author attracted the attention of literary connoisseurs and the reading public with the book of novellas and short stories Knutar (Knots), which was first published in 2004, and eight years later, in 2012, saw a new, expanded edition. It was as if tying and untying knots, tightening and loosening them, both before and after that book, was what she was most concerned with, as if it were her favorite, almost obsessive topic. She likes strangeness and absurd situations, she likes to use unusual motifs, such as the one in the story about the boy who was born with an umbilical cord so strong that it is impossible to cut it, it is impossible to separate him from his mother and he is forced to live with her constantly attached. In her novels and stories, there are often references to other writers and their works because, as the author says, everything she writes mostly comes from the books she has read. That is why it sometimes seems that these are not novels and stories in the classical sense, but more like some novelistic-essayist writings, both about mental and sexual, as well as about family relationships, about love, about complicated and unavoidable situations, about people who are bound to each other in an unusual way. These prose writings balance between the spiritual and the physical, between the real and the surreal, the serious and the comic-ironic. In a brief flash, life is shown perhaps in its purest form, either in a dream or in real life, which seems almost the same to us when we have the prose writings of this author in our hands.
