Baudelaire Charles

Summary

Charles Baudelaire: Rockets and other posthumous works

Baudelaire began to record rockets, prose fragments from the posthumous legacy as early as 1855, joining them from 1859 onwards with other entries, under the title My naked heart, and he wrote down his first impressions of Belgium in 1864, shortly after his arrival in Brussels. Due to illness and premature death, three separately conceived - for the author and how important - literary drafts were not crowned with books. But this "enigma" does not at all overshadow the impressiveness of the preserved fragments. Behind the fractured, bitter prose is the especially strong cognitive-critical urge of Baudelaire the thinker, with "elements" of the lyric poet "in its traces", an urge that over time pushes him further and further away from the intimacy of the self, autobiographical memories, evoked dreams, satirical and pamphlet-like reckoning with his century and the world. This sort of torso of posthumous works not only offers a poignant testimony of the most difficult period in the life of the genius French poet and unquestionable evidence of the paradoxical clairvoyance of his distracted spirit, but also points us to the previously unsuspected possibilities of fragmentary writing.
