Rodoreda Mercè

Summary

Mercè Rodoreda: The Broken Mirror The Broken Mirror is a family saga about three generations of the Valldaura family in Barcelona, from the end of the 19th century to the Franco dictatorship. It is structured as a kaleidoscopic story of many characters, told non-linearly in the third person, in the manner of the so-called free indirect speech. It begins with Teresa Goday, a young and beautiful fish seller in the Barcelona market who changes her destiny by marrying an old rich man, and ends in utter decadence: the voice of a rat leaving the rich man's ruined mansion. Rodoreda sovereignly rules all the voices, and the reader is drawn into a story about love and its gropings, adulteries, fatal family secrets, the brutality of power, death, cruelty, greed, incest, murder and longing for something unattainable. All the protagonists are tangible in life: they have virtues and flaws, they are bloody under the skin, whether they are rich people or maids in a villa. No matter how tumultuous, the novel is nevertheless a dedication to the joy of family togetherness, the pleasure of love and everyday hedonism, the thoughtless happiness of childhood, all those seemingly unimportant moments of life that ultimately remain in our memories. With each page, scenes are imprinted on the reader's mind: life is complicated, but worth living. Both the outer and inner worlds of the characters, detailed and unsentimental, unfold before the reader. There are no heroes and victims are all innocent, as the author says. Life happens to you and when you marry richly, secure a villa for your offspring, when you love and surrender to events. However, in the end, everything will be overgrown with grass, ivy and wild laurel ruled by the spirits of the departed. And the words of Stendahl will come true: "A novel is a mirror that you take with you on your journey."
