Summary

A Conversation with an Angel

Collection edited by Nick Hornby

It is often said that collections of short stories are like compilation albums. You rarely come across one that contains more than a few good stories. Well, if we go by the well-known statement that a good collection contains three good stories, an exceptionally good collection of five to seven, Conversation with an Angel departs from the usual norms.

Namely, under the editorial baton of Nick Hornby, we are offered no less than twelve smart, unrestrained, witty, tender, naughty, in a word original stories, twelve innovative and completely different voices, twelve extremely talented literary stars gathered in a charitable project, whose is goal is to raise money to help autistic children, and from every book purchased, 5 kuna will be donated to autism centers in Croatia and England.

Robert Harris, Melissa Bank, Zadie Smith, Helen Fielding and others united their voices to help children trapped in their isolated and secretive universe to break through the boundaries that prevent them from joining the outside world.

Each of the stories bears its own personal stamp, and Hornby's only request that everything be written in the first person turned out to be not limiting at all. Namely, the voices include that of the dead dog Steven, a cook who prepares the last meals for death row in some twisted version of Great Britain, and the British Prime Minister of unspecified political affiliation, and considering the vividness, it should not be surprising that some of the stories have already been shown on theater boards. Translated by Petra Potočnik, Algoritam presents Nick Hornby's dream team in its strongest composition.
