Von Horvath Odon

Summary

Odon von Horvath: Child of Our Age

Ödön von Horváth's last novel, *Child of Our Age* (Child of Our Age) - which was published after the death of the 36-year-old author by the publishing house Allert de Lange from Amsterdam - is a story about a soldier imbued with phrases of militant nationalism. Franz Werfel called the character "the devil's emissary on Earth" whose "inventiveness in the sphere of senseless evil seems inexhaustible. His basic urge is the desire to inflict suffering. Even when he seems to be grieving for lost love, he begins murder. With inexorable consistency, this character presents himself in the first person. With the ease that characterizes his style, Horváth depicts political cause and effect." For Stefan Zweig, Horváth's novel was "one of the most important German documents of our generation".
