Heimito von Doderer: Trumpets of Jericho
According to his own admission, H.F. Doderer's best work, accompanied by an excellent commentary or afterword by Thomas Mele. It is the last, seventh divertimento from the cycle of so-called short stories, which should therefore have a kind of musical structure. Doderer himself was convinced of the exceptional importance of that story. When he was asked shortly before his death what his most perfect work was, he replied: "That work is called *Trumpets of Jericho* and it was published in 1958. It is, if you like, my main work." Even if we ignore Doderer's constant ambivalent flirtation, the statement – given his extensive novels – is still surprising. At the same time, it is also true: *Trumpets* are undoubtedly perfectly executed on the motivic level, but on the content level they tend towards unusual opacity. This is precisely where their fascination lies.
