Julia Kapornjai: Siege of Borders
Julia Kapornjai distinguished herself as an authentic poetic voice with her first book Living Knot (2002), followed by White Sun (2005), From a Drop of the Sea (2019) and Panacea (2021). Although they undoubtedly differ from each other in terms of poetic processes and thematic-motive content, a striking common feature is dedicated work on the composition. The author pays great attention to the arrangement of the texts that form individual cycles, considering their interpenetration and the meaning that culminates precisely from the relationship of these poetic texts. This also applies to the collection "Siege of Borders", in which the reader can expect a kind of novelty: the poetic texts are interrupted by a cycle composed of prose miniatures - short lyrical notes, a kind of dashes. Genre fluidity - where some poems are written in prose, while others can be most accurately characterized as short stories - does not impair the book's coherence or its role in the overall structure, which we will illuminate in more detail later. The entry into the world of the "Siege of Borders" collection is marked by the introductory text "Lego Minimalism", the center of which is the relationship between "then" and "now". The expansion of the motif core around this axis leads to the interweaving of the motifs of transience, disappearance and destruction. Thus, an important topic was introduced at the very beginning - the topic of time. It seems to us that the phrase "complex simplicity" best describes the poetic procedure used here: the scene that the lyrical subject observes is transformed into a thought and a short comparison. The beauty and power of the work rest on the awareness of time and the knowledge that nothing is permanent, while the dramatic effect comes from the impression that the poetic subject at the moment of speaking notices how: instead of a cloud of dust / once there was a house / ...now there is an empty lot.
