Summary
Veronica Roth: Divergent
In the distant future, the city of Chicago has divided society into five separate factions, each representing certain virtues of humanity: selfless, peaceful, virtuous, fearless, and learned. On Selection Day, all the sixteen-year-olds in the town take an aptitude test to determine which faction they really belong to. After the test, they are still free to decide for themselves whether to switch to the faction suggested by the ability test or stay with the one they were born into. Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Pryor was born into a family of Selfless, but she never felt comfortable there - despite the people who surrounded her, she was lonely and felt that life among the Selfless held her back, as if she didn't really belong there. When it came time for the ability test, her results proved to be inconclusive: she doesn't belong to just one faction, but possesses abilities for three factions: Selfless, Learned, and Fearless. She learned the truth about herself in the utmost secrecy and was warned not to share this information with anyone under any conditions.
