Masa-čovjek: drama iz socijalne revolucije 20. stoljeća
Toller Ernst
Summary
Ernst Toller: Mass-man: a drama from the social revolution of the 20th century
The dramatic work of this famous German writer is another one of his plays in the expressionist writing style. The main character is Sonja Irena L., a peacemaker who leaves the bourgeois comforts of her well-to-do family in order to bravely fight for her ideals (the welfare of the workers), which will eventually cost her her life. Through this female character, the author presents the conflict between a humane, pacifist idea in favor of workers and the idea of a radical solution to workers' issues through a revolutionary act (direct conflict with the police and the army). In this sense, through this drama, Toller presents, personified in the aforementioned Sonja Irena L., the decision of his great socio-political dilemma: it is not possible to be a peacemaker and a revolutionary at the same time. The author wrote this play in the Eichstatt fortress prison, where he was imprisoned as a five-year prisoner.
