One Man's Struggle
One of the most important German expressionist plays, Toller's Metamorphosis, written in 1917/1918 and printed in 1919, was staged at the famous Tribüne theater in Berlin on 30 IX. 1919 Karlheinz Martin, with Fritz Kortner in the title role of Friedrich. This performance is considered one of the most important dates in German theater art, a superb stage event which, due to its creative and strong technical performance, was praised by critics and exceptionally well received by the audience. For the expressionist stage (texts, acting art, scenic innovations...) this play opened the way wide and ensured it one of the fundamental places in the development of modern German theater art. Although she had 115 performances, Toller never saw her due to her incarceration. After Berlin, The Transfiguration was staged on the theater stages of Hamburg and Stuttgart in 1920, then in Leipzig in 1924, Nuremberg in 1926... As part of the English P.E.N. delegation, he gave a famous speech in Dubrovnik in 1933 against the Nazi government and the political situation in Germany at that time....
